Julia De Kadt

PhD fellow, Developmental Pathways to Health Research Unit: University of the Witwatersrand

One of reasons Julia de Kadt founded the Durban branch of IkamvaYouth, a township-based, non- profit organisation that helps scholars pass matric, is her core belief that every young person is full of potential and that education is the key to unlocking that potential. Guided by two subjects that fascinate her learning and policies that shape human wellbeing in society De Kadt is currently completing her PhD on learner mobility in an effort to understand how and to what extent children in South Africa travel every day in search of the best possible education they can access and afford. With an impressive academic career, including an undergraduate degree in brain and cognitive sciences from MIT and a masters in politics and public policy from Princeton, De Kadt aims, to create the knowledge required to inform new policies that will facilitate equal access to high-quality education for all South African children, regardless of their background. Lu Larche
