Bethuel Mangena

Cartoonist

Mangena is an up and coming freelance cartoonist.

After studying fine arts and computer animation, he worked at the Wits Art shop, before being contracted to The Sunday World as a freelance cartoonist. Later that year, he started submitting sports cartoons to The Star newspaper who published his work for a period of six months. In 2001, he was approached by the Sowetan’s “Money Matters” to submit business and finance related cartoons.

His work was exhibited for the first time in France in 2002, alongside South African legends Zapiro a~d Rico (Madam & Eve) and the United Kingdom’s Steve Bell. His s-econd exhibition in late 2002 was a South African Cartoonist collaboration entitled Black and White in ink. This was soon followed by the Durban World Economic Forum exhibition in 2003 where once he was exhibited alongside Zapiro and other international artists. His latest work was commissioned by the British Council when Mangena successfully applied to participate in the British Council/Mail and Guardian/Sowetan partnered young cartoonist project.

Through this project Mangena and four other young South African cartoonist were mentored by Zapiro and Steve Bell. Mangena also works as an animator at Unamazing, a local computer animation company.
