Buti Manamela

National secretary of the Young Communist League

Buti is the national secretary of the Young Communist League.

He has been beside Jacob Zuma throughout his trial and his outspokenness about the injustice of Zuma’s trials and tribulations has been widely reported. The firebrand leader of the young communists was born in Phagameng, in Limpopo, in 1979.

His political education began early in life when he joined the African National Congress Youth League in 1992, although he was under-aged and only qualified for membership two years later. He was also the coordinator of the Congress of South African Students at his high school and was elected branch secretary of the youth league in 1994, at the age of 15. At Mamelodi College for further education and training, where Buti studied electronic engineering, he spearheaded the establishment of the South African Students Congress (Sasco) end was elected as branch chairperson in the same year. He was elected president of the South African College Students Association in 2000. In the same year he also served as the provincial chairperson of Sasco, and was elected deputy president of the congress in 2001. That same year, he joined the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union as its regional organiser.

Manamela was elected as the first national secretary of the Young Communist League after its re-establishment in December 2003.
