Director of the Marang Centre for Maths and Science Education
Mamokgethi is director of the Marang Centre for Maths and Science Education and an associate professor of mathematics education – in which she holds a PhD – at Wits University. She is a much-respected mathematics education researcher and educator of mathematics teachers. She has published 30 reviewed articles and has been a speaker at several international conferences and universities worldwide.
Her research interests include teaching and learning mathematics in multilingual mathematics classrooms. Mamokgethi is the managing editor of mathematics education journal, Pythagoras, and serves as reviewer for the following international journals: The Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, The Journal of Research in Mathematics Education and Educational Studies in Mathematics Education.
She has won several awards, the latest being a National Science and Technology Forum award for the most outstanding South African young female black researcher in 2004. She is the national president of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa; the past chairperson of the board of the South African Mathematics Foundation; the South African representative to the International Commission for Mathematical Instruction; a Trustee of the Telkom Foundation and a member of the executive committee of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education.
In the midst of all this, she does relax now and again!
