In the publishing world, Michelle has made an indelible mark opening doors for women writers that, historically, have been closed.
She began her professional life in magazines and the press, working as a journalist and sub-editor for the Mail & Guardian, CityLife and Big Media. Michelle’s byline has appeared in the country’s major glossies: Shape, FHM and Men’s Health. Before her move into book publishing, she was managing editor of SL magazine. She is currently publishing manager of Struik’s new women’s imprint, Oshun Books, which has on its list top novelists, poets and writers of non-fiction. In 2006, Matthews was nominated on to the British Council’s award for International Young Publisher of the Year. The experience took her on a fact-finding tour to Europe.
