Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom
Radical new playwright Paul, whose work explores the dark side of South African life, was born in Meadowlands in 1975.
A bright youth, he excelled in school and registered for a BSc at the University of the Witwatersrand. In the early Nineties he gravitated towards television scriptwriting, ultimately penning the 1 kpisode Orlando. Then he got into drama for stage. His early works were written with the current artistic director of the State Theatre, Aubrey Sekhabi. All explored violent conflict: Not with My Gun, The Stick, and the later Cards and Relativity: Township Stories. His most recent works were written with actor Presley Chweneyagae, star of the Oscar-awarded Tsotsi.
In 2005, Grootboom won the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award for drama.
