Coordinator of the Claim Back the Right Campaign
Wangari is the coordinator of the Claim Back the Right Campaign, which has a specific focus on a gender rights-based approach to the HIV/Aids epidemic, at the Gender Aids Forum.
This feisty Kenyan first started her career at a customer queries and complaints centre in her home country, before moving to South Africa at the end of 2002 to get involved in the fight against HIV/ Aids. The campaign she now runs has at its core clauses that advance women’s sexual and reproductive health rights with the aim of lobbying the government to incorporate them in the HIV/ Aids and STD Strategic Plan for South Africa.
Wangari has also been involved in the activities of the One in Nine campaign at provincial and national level. This campaign was founded to lend support to the complainant in the Jacob Zuma rape trial and other rape survivors. The participants in the campaign have been making court appearances to monitor the judicial processes on sexual crimes, mobilising groups to actively and publicly demonstrate solidarity and support for women who report sexual crimes, raising and Increasing public consciousness on sexual violence, networking to expand support and monitoring media coverage of the rape trial. Wangari is currently undertaking a philosophy degree in gender studies to add to her MA in gender studies.
