It took Francois Steyn just 10 matches in a Sharks jersey to catch the eye of Springbok coach Jake White, who included him in the South African squad to tour Europe at the end of last year. Born in Aliwal North, Steyn played for the Free State under 18s in Craven Week before heading to the Sharks Academy. He captained the South African under-19 side at the IRB World Championship and was later named South African under-19 player of the year. After being handed the Springbok jersey last year, the young flyhalf, who has just turned 20, scored during his debut game. Playing on the left wing, he scored a try against Ireland and was then moved to fullback for the next match against England, where he scored a long-range drop goal. With the World Cup in France looming, opposing sides are sure to see plenty more of the promising youngster.
