Artist, theatre practitioner and filmmaker
Gerhard Marx is an artist, theatre practitioner and filmmaker.
He received his MA (FA) from Wits University’s School of Arts in 2004. His theatre collaborations have included works with the internationally recognised Handspring Puppet Company and premier director Lara Foot-Newton. Together they created the internationally acclaimed play Tshepang, an exploration of child rape that was seen at major venues worldwide. Marx has received Naledi awards for best set design for two consecutive years.
In 2004, he was awarded the Ampersand Fellowship, a two-month-long artist’s residency in the Ampersand apartment, New York. He is the creator, with Foot- Newton, of the animated short film And There in the Dust. The work enjoyed numerous screenings at film festivals across the globe and won numerous awards, including best animated film and best international short film at the Bird’s Eye Festival (London, 2007), best short film at the Latin, African and Asian Film Festival (Milan, 2006) and three awards at the South African Film Awards (2006).
In 2007, the collaborators received a Sundance Fellowship to participate in the Sundance Film Festival’s screenwriter’s laboratory. Marx has also screened his work at three solo exhibitions.
