Kopano Matlwa is a winner of the European Union Literary award for her first novel, Coconut (Jacana Media, 2007). Matlwa describes herself as “a restless soul”. She was head girl of St Peter’s College in Johannesburg, where she matriculated in 2003 with distinctions in all subjects. In 2005, she was honoured for academic excellence and leadership potential as one of eight South African Goldman Sachs Global Leaders. As a result, she represented South Africa at the 2005 Goldman Sachs Global Leadership Institute in New York City.
She is a founding member and chairperson of the non-profit health promotion organisation, Waiting Room Education by Medical Students, and co-owner of Forest Hill Residence Tuckshop, a growing business that employs a staff of 10 UCT students.
