Thoriso Magongwa is South Africa’s fastest-rising ballet star.
The boyish principal dancer of Ballet Theatre Afrikan has been praised by critics for his “bravura and lightness of movement”. Indeed, Magongwa can fly like a butterfly, which experts attribute to the combination of a classical training with township roots. He reached the semifinals of the Prix de Lausanne in 2000, was nominated for an FNB Dance Umbrella award for most outstanding male dancer in 2003, and reached the finals of the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in 2005.
The young Sowetan has been dancing since the age of 13. Today he is principal dancer and choreographer-in-residence of the professional repertory company Ballet Theatre Afrikan.
