Vusi Mahlangu is the chief executive officer of one of the youngest executive teams on the JSE, Makalani Holdings. The company, a BEE mezzanine finance company formed by Rand Merchant Bank to mobilise capital for BEE and development investments, was listed in the investment companies sector of the JSE in 2005. Until January that year, Mahlangu was head of public sector finance at Investec Bank, a division set up by him in 2001. The division is involved in all aspects of providing debt products to state-owned companies, municipalities, water boards and other government-owned entities. His investment banking experience and responsibilities at Investec over the past six years involved funding management buyout transactions and asset finance involving aircraft and other assets. Before he joined Investec, he worked for African Oxygen Limited (Afrox), first as a process engineer designing gas separation plants and later as a production manager for its then biggest air- separations plant. Mahlangu also holds a directorship at the Tamela Group. His qualifications include a BSc in chemical engineering and an MBA from Harvard.
