Rene Kalmer

When she was in grade one, middle-distance athlete
Rene Kalmer desperately wanted to run but was put
off the idea by a friend who convinced her that it would be an
unpleasant experience. A few years later she was persuaded
to try out for athletics at school and the rest, as they say, is
history. She fi rst started running cross-country but has found
a niche in middle-distance running. Her ultimate goal is to
get that elusive Olympic gold medal. To realise this dream
Kalmer recently committed to being a full-time athlete,
training in Johannesburg most days. And if she's not training,
you'll fi nd her relaxing with a good book or dreaming of
shopping and lazy days on a cool beach. Ryan Hoffmann
