Steven Budlender

Advocate, Johannesburg Bar

For Steven Budlender the best part of a court appearance is standing up to present an oral argument. "It's both nerve-racking and utterly exhilarating, he says. Budlender has appeared in numerous cases before the Constitutional Court and has won two landmark victories one for children's rights in the Centre for Child Law case, and a socio economic rights victory in the Joseph case. He has also appeared regularly in the Supreme Court of Appeal and in high courts throughout South Africa, on constitutional and non constitutional matters. According to one of his colleagues, "he's in a field where experience is king. It shouldn't be possible to have the kind of practice he has until one is at least 45 or so. He's 31. For now, Steven is looking forward to more of the same: "If I can spend another 10 years doing what I have for the past five, then bring it on. Lionel Faull
