Ntobeko Ntusi

Cardiology specialist

Dr Ntobeko Ntusi is at the cutting edge of research in a highly specialised area of medicine using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography to study the development of inflammatory heart disease and testing potential treatments for the disease. Originally from Mthatha, Ntusi left the country as a teenager when his mother chose to pursue a PhD at an American university. During his undergraduate degree at Haverford College, Pennsylvania, he majored in molecular and cell biology and graduated with honours. He returned to South Africa in 1999 to study medicine at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Although his early interests were obstetrics and geriatric care, he eventually chose to specialise in cardiovascular medicine. Ntusi, who last year was awarded a prestigious Nuffield research fellowship and is pursuing a DPhil in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Oxford, is also completing both an MMed in internal medicine and an MD in cardiology through UCT. Faranaaz Parker
